DIY Watercolor iPhone Case

January 17, 2012

Cases by Jacqueline Maldonado $35
As aforementioned, here are are the embarrassingly easy steps to DIYing a watercolor (or any other kind of print) iPhone case. In a nutshell- you print a picture, cut it out in the shape of a cell phone, and then put it in a clear case. And while that truly is the long and short of it, I will elaborate in an attempt to make it look like I did something intricate and time consuming. The whole project took me less than 20 minutes and cost  about $1.
All you'll need:
Clear iPhone case (I got this one on ebay for less than $1!), print/fabric of your choice, scissors, and a pen or pencil.
1:Choose picture (these are from my Pinterest collection of wall art), scale to 5x7 or 4x6 and print.
*move your case around to choose which segment of the picture you'd like to be displayed.
2: Trace an outline of the case
 3. Cut it out. Make sure yours is slightly less jacked up than mine.
 4. Put paper in case and trace a whole around the camera eye.
I will explain in a moment that there is an alternate/better way to do this step.
 5. Remove paper from the case, fold oval in half for an easier cut.
6. Put the print in the case and wah lah!
Okay, so here's the better alternative (it takes me a time or two to figure out the best way to do things) for cutting a hole for the camera, which I used on my second print. Lay the case face side down on the back of the print and trace and cut so you can't see the ink or pencil marks.
 Love it.
Obviously you can use any paper or fabric in the case. The possibilities are infinite- ikat, quatrefoil, a note from your boyfriend...whatevs babe.

I also ordered this better quality case with a white bumper for more protection. Only $6, max!
Because God knows Apple is not going to replace my phone if it cracks, even though...ya know, I pay insurance on it and everything.

I am lah-git
 head over heels
for watercolor.

I mean, hell ...I wish I was watercolor. Everyone is prettier when their face looks like it's shaped by wet Skittles. This post may be a little premature on my end considering it is the precursor to all of the DIY watercolor crafts and solutions I have started/ planned and have yet to finish, but I'm super impatient and wanted to vent my adoration for this beauty of an art. The "pieces" I love the most are the collection of paintings my 2 & 3 year olds bring home each week after school. Some of it is so good I swear the brushstrokes themselves could have only been done by the hands of a.....5 year old. I've been setting aside my favorites from their art class with the intention of having them matted, framed, and hung. Not to mention I love to paint, and have one or two that are not too shabby if I do say so myself. Which I did. I just said so myself. Even though by the time they are ten I will have a stockpile, there are a couple of water colorists (?) who I really love and have found to offer very affordable prints for sale. The first is Caitlin McGauley, who puts all of my favorite quintessential girly girl what have yous onto paper. Closets dripping with leopard and fur, statement necklaces made of sparkles and stones, pink floral garden pathways- the works.

My husband and I are starting to make plans about moving, and I can't wait to have a blank canvas to decorate from top to bottom. Except for his man cave. Which, let me guess...will be orange and blue with a bunch of dead animals and probably some street signs he stole in high school. yay. But God as my witness- the first room I decorate will be my cloffice! (closet/office). Ever since I have come across these prints, I can't stop daydreaming about incorporating them. My brainstorm is looking something like this..
Caitlyn McGauley Prints, Pink & White Stripe Wallpaper, Zebra Rug, Lucite Desk, Gold Decor & Tchotchke
(sunburst mirror, log side table, desk chair, frames) , Vase of Flowers, and of course, course, course- something turquoise.
Once I have my cloffice set up I can stock it with a sampling of water color stationary, note cards, and calendars from Inslee by Design. Similar in girly girl aesthetic, Inslee also specializes in sketches that are straight of the Runway from fashion week shows like Jason Wu and Lela Rose.

Not to mention, everything on her site is unbelievably affordable. I'm talking $10 for an 8x10. I'll take 20.

So pretty, I wanna be these 2D babers! I can't, I know. So I continue my search for all things water color. In my perusing I found these beauty queen iPhone cases, which I figured out a nifty (paint free)way to DIY(will share in my finished products post).
And I also have not been able to stop thinking about this obscenely amazing, I-seriously-said-"shit!"-out loud when I saw it wall paper that has got to make it into my house before I start screaming like that little bia from Willy Wonka who wants the Golden Egg. "I want it NOOOWWWWWWW!!!," and through the trap door down the tunnel to the garbage disposal I go.
The last thing to check off my list is some watercolor clothing/textiles. I have scoured pages and pages of Etsy, Asos, Google, you name it- looking for watercolor dress that's just the right print and so far my efforts have been fruitless. I was shopping with one of my besters this past weekend and asking her if she had come across anything along the lines of what I was looking for and she reminded me that she has that amazing watercolor dress from the H&M Garden Collection a couple of Springs ago.

If I can't find anything right up my alley in a reasonable amount of time, I'm going to have to borrow. Heather- where you at girl?? Can I wear???

I'll be sure to keep y'all posted on my watercolor DIY's and purchases. At least I'm finally done with all the glitter.
